Sport has long been recognized as more than just a physical activity. In his 2018 document, "Giving the Best of Yourself: A Document on the Christian Perspective on Sport and the Human Person," Pope Francis emphasized that sport, when practiced with respect for human dignity and free from exploitation, can serve as a model for all areas of life. According to the Pope, when sport transcends pure physicality, it opens the door to the spiritual and even the mysterious, providing opportunities for personal growth, character development, and a deeper understanding of life’s meaning.
At Holy Trinity Catholic School, we are proud to offer an athletic program that not only focuses on physical fitness but also aligns with the values of respect, fairness, and virtue—principles that are at the heart of our Catholic education. Sport serves as a platform to introduce young people to the cardinal virtues of fortitude, temperance, prudence, and justice, all of which are essential in shaping strong, virtuous individuals.
This approach to sport was championed by St. John Bosco, the founder of the Salesian order, who believed that play and movement were key to the holistic development of young people. As a youth chaplain in Turin, Italy, in 1847, Don Bosco recognized the significance of sport in fostering personal growth and mutual respect, even in the context of competition. His legacy continues to inspire Catholic educators and youth programs around the world, including here at Holy Trinity School.
The Holy Trinity School Athletic Program, available to students in grades 3-8, offers a well-rounded approach to athletics that emphasizes teamwork, discipline, and personal growth. We are proud to be part of the Grand Rapids Area Catholic Elementary Athletic Council (GRACEAC), under the guidance of the Diocesan School Office. Our program is facilitated by Athletic Director Jeff North, who works alongside the Holy Trinity School Athletic Board to ensure a productive, organized, and spiritually enriching experience for all participants.
The Athletic Board coordinates volunteers, enforces guidelines, and reviews the Athletic Handbook to maintain a high standard of excellence within our program. Meetings are held at 6:30 PM, providing opportunities for open communication and collaboration among parents, coaches, and staff.
At Holy Trinity School, we believe that sport is not only about developing physical skills but also about building character, fostering a sense of community, and growing in virtue. We invite families to support our athletes, participate in events, and join us in making our athletic program a positive and impactful experience for all students.
Let us continue to work together to educate and inspire the next generation of young people, using sport as a tool to shape not only their bodies but also their hearts and minds.
